"The Seduction of Eve"

The “Seduction of Eve” is a semi-autobiographical piece done to honor my best friend and wife, Catherine Viann Belmonte. The piece originally began as an abstract sketch of Catherine done in graphite. The graphite sketch was rough and had only the figure of my wife and the tree trunk beside her. I liked what was unfolding on paper so I began to work the composition to include a surreal profile of my head for balance on the opposing side. I left the ground black after working some details into it originally but determined that approach too busy and limiting to the main subject in the foreground.
The tree represents our life together and the many people we have met while married are represented by the falling leaves made of eyes watching us.  I constructed Catherine's image as this complex, radiant siren even though she maintains a humble, and simple quality about her. The title of the piece, “The Seduction of Eve” was chosen as it best represents the fact that my wife's innocent sweetness “fell” for a guy like me with so many faults...a seduction of sorts.
